Horse & Rider Profiles

Eventing Riders

Phillip Dutton
The piedmont hills of West Grove, Pennsylvania, are a far cry from a sheep farm in Australia. Three-day event rider Phillip Dutton, 38, knows this all too well since leaving the land Down Under in 1991.

Kim Vinoski
For Scottsville, Virginia, three-day event rider Kim Vinoski, the 1984 Los Angeles Olympic Games solidified the then ten year-old girl's dream of one day riding at the international level.

Dressage Riders

George Williams
Dressage rider George Williams has always wanted to compete at the international level. After half a lifetime pursuing the perfection of dressage, he is finally reaching his dream.

Show Jumpers

Nona Garson
Nona Garson rode her famous Russian Thoroughbred, Rhythmical, to a spot on the United States Equestrian show jumping team at the 2000 Olympics in Sydney, Australia.

Laura Kraut
Laura Kraut, age 36, of Oconomowoc, Wisconsin, is having what can only be described as an incredible year in the grand prix ring, having clinched wins in grands prix at Spruce Meadows; Minnesota; Indiannapolis; the Pennsylvania National Horse Show; North Fork, New York; and the Washington International Horse Show (at press time).

Jeffery Welles
Jeffery began riding at the age of 6 in his native North Carolina. He has had success riding both hunters and jumpers. His Grand Prix career started in 1982 at the age of 20. He won his first Grand Prix the following year at Harrisburg.

Todd Minikus
Year 2000 Olympic alternate Todd Minikus is an All-American guy. He watches Monday night football and he used to ride bulls, but truth be told, he's at his best while guiding horses expertly over huge grand prix fences, which definitely does not fall under the "All American" category.

Endurance Riders

Heather Bergantz
Heather and Red (Chrystal's Charm) were teamed 3 years ago after he arrived at the ranch of Skip Lightfoot in San Jose, California after being literally taken from the stockyard truck that was headed for the horse slaughterhouse.

Angie McGhee
Angie McGhee has been recently named to the (unofficial) USA East Short List for the Pan American Endurance Championships (PAC) to be held in Vermont on August 25th of 2001.

Julie Suhr
Julie Suhr just turned 76. She lives in Scott's Valley near Santa Cruz, California. For over thirty years, she has ridden in cross county endurance races of 30, 50, and 100 miles each.

Pony Hunters

Alexandra Arute
With only two-and-a-half years in the saddle, nine-year-old Alexandra Arute of Farmington, Connecticut, is already turning judge's heads in the pony hunter rings.

Callie Leone
Watch out, there's another member of Team Leone! She's a little bit smaller and not quite as old, but she's got the same competitive drive and love of the sport.

Maggie McAlary
Maggie McAlary has plenty of firsts to her credit. Last year, at age 10, she was the youngest in history to win the AHSA Pony Medal Finals - and on a small pony, no less!

Addison Phillips
"There's something special about the way she relates to the animals," observes Addison Phillips' trainer, Kate Stoffel Oliver of Heritage Farm.

Junior Riders

Kate Hart
Kate Hart has had quite a year. She won the $25,000 Hunter Classic at High Prairie Farms this summer, beating professional trainers, serious amateurs and other junior riders. She is nationally ranked in the top five in the large junior hunters. And she qualified for the AHSA Medal, Maclay, Washington International Equitation, and USET finals. What makes this amazing is...

Shaine Brooks
Shaine Brooks, 16, of West Sand Lake, New York, has been riding "since I was born. I can't remember when I wasn't on a horse." Currently in the top three of the AHSA (now USA Equestrian) Hunter Seat Medal standings, Brooks' forte is finding good distances to the jumps.

Paige Johnson
When Paige Johnson turns 16 in September, chances are it will be a "Sweet 16" birthday for her in many ways! Johnson, of Salamander Farms in The Plains, Virginia, will be primed for the indoors shows with an impressive roster of horses set to compete in both junior hunters and jumpers and in equitation.

Anna McKnight
Keep your eye on junior jumper ace Anna McKnight, 16, of Whitehall, Maryland when she and Marina take on the 55th annual Pennsylvania National Horse Show in Harrisburg, October 12 - 21. McKnight rides the 10-year-old Brazilian mare, plus a grand prix horse, Montrachet, 16, who formerly won for both Elise Haas and Judy Garfolo.

Jennifer Champagne
With her nine-year-old Warmblood gelding, Bolero, Champagne, who bought the horse last spring, has amassed all those Medal points at shows in Ocala, Florida in Saratoga, New York and Chagrin Falls (Ohio). Look for her to be a major contender in the Maclay Finals, also at this fall's indoors circuit.
